I’ve been off the radar for the past month. But I’m always researching under our feet, above our heads, and up into the solar system. I’m back to give a quick update on the timing of a potent squall line moving across New Hampshire later this afternoon (a Tornado Watch is in effect for entire granite state), a Father’s Day outlook (and U.S. Open update), and a temperature outlook for the rest of this month into early July. In terms of precipitation., while the 53 year drought is over for my NBA Champions Knicks, drought busting rains are coming for the Southeast.
NH to Maine This Afternoon
While all New Hampshire is currently under tornado watch (doesn’t mean there will be an actual tornado, but conditions warrant a watch) a line of heavy downpours and gusty winds will be moving from West to East across the state today. The line arrives in Keene around 4 PM, Concord by 4:30pm, and Durham by 5pm. See maps below. System doesn’t stick around, but expect heavy downpours and some gusty winds with a small risk of an isolated tornado throughout the state.

For the rest of the weekend and Father’s Day for New England, humidity drops under partly sunny skies. Can’t rule out brief showers in the afternoon both days, but temperatures will be in upper 70s. Conditions at the US Open (Shinnecock in Southampton) will continue to be a significant challenge on Friday and not as bad Saturday with winds whipping out of the west, making professionals look like weekend hackers. Sunday will be the best day.
TRI-STATE Area Weekend
Outdoor activities for Father’s Day weekend are a go. Skies will be mostly sunny with temps in the 80s and low humidity. For you boaters, it’ll be windy on Saturday, but tapering off on Sunday.
Temperature Outlook
While we have had a warmer than normal start to June, for those who love heat and humidity, sorry as cooler than normal temperatures invade the Northeast the next two weeks and on to early July.

Temperature Anomaly 6/18-25 (blue = cool)

Temperature Anomaly (6/25-7/2)
Precipitation will be above normal over the next 3 weeks. See forecasted total rainfall through 7/3!

Forecasted Rainfall Through 7/3
Recall in my last post back on May 20th, I gave a hint about an early start to the tropical season in the Gulf. Well we just had had Tropical Storm Arthur impact the Gulf states the last couple of days. Remnants of Arthur is now moving NE and will drop drought busting rainfall across Georgia, South Carolina tonight into the AM, then move off the Carolina coast and deepen back into a tropical system. Fortunately, it will continue to move off our coastline and not impact us at all.

That’s it for now. In my next update, which will be out shortly, I’ll discuss the big uptick in seismic activity this month and what could be on the horizon, which I hinted at back on 5/20. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there, and remember, weather never sleeps!
