Wintry Mix Not as Bad as the Knicks; Followed by Our First Arctic Blast Leaving Many Aghast!

Posted on December 16, 2019December 16, 2019

Good Monday morning! So here’s what to expect for our 2 part system. The good news is the 2nd part moves into our area a bit later and wetter, initially, as to not have such a negative impact on the evening commute. First, light to moderate snowfall mixed with sleet, enters CNJ and SNJ between 8-10am this morning and moving East towards NYC. But tapers off in the early afternoon. Little to no accumulation is expected with isolated slippery spots. Also this part generally avoids Lower HV on north.

HRRR Forecasted 12pm Precip (Blue: Snow, darker blue = heavier, Orange: Sleet, Green: Rain)

For Round 2, our next batch of precip makes its way into NJ, moving west to east (and eventually trending NE) beginning between 6-9pm. It’s your classic setup with snow to the north, rain to the south, with a mix of sleet and freezing rain in between. On the north side, mainly snow will fall from Rt80 on north (1-3″ with isolated 4/5″ in LHV to UHV) thru the late evening hours. A mix of snow to sleet and freezing rain rides just north of the spine of Rt78 towards Rt80, and mainly all rain south of Rt78 into SNJ NYC and LI. The early evening commute fortunately shouldn’t be too bad. But I’d recommend, if possible, to be home by 6/7pm, the latest. However, if traveling later in the evening, especially into the northern counties and suburbs of NJ and NY, you may run into some problems with slushy slippery and icy roadways. So please take extra caution.

Tuesday Morning: As a warm airmass pushes northward overnight, the rain line will also move north to approximately Rt80 with the nwburbs of NJ and LHV still under sleet and freezing rain during the Tuesday morning commute (north of 84 remains all snow). I wouldn’t be surprised to see some delayed openings in NWNJ (Sussex Warren and Morris) and further north, due to icy conditions. The enter tri-state dries out Tuesday afternoon (sunset alert possible). Careful of some icy sidewalks, driveways and parking lots Tuesday night and especially Wednesday morning as temps drop into the 20s by daybreak (rising only in the low to mid30s Wednesday).

06z NAM 3km Forecasted Accumulated Freezing Rain

Load up on firewood as our coldest, albeit brief arctic airmass of the season arrives Wednesday night into Thursday (lows: teens w possible single digits in nwburbs, highs: ONLY in the upper20s-low30s) and Friday (lows: upper teens to low20s, highs: low to mid30s). Check out the potential windchills for the Northeast Thursday morning on map below! Even the Florida Panhandle drops into the 30s! Next weekend temps moderate into the upper 30s to low-mid40s. That’s it for now. I’ll be back shortly on what I’m tracking next. When you have time, take a gander at my menu section as I made some additions with radar and satellite links, along with forecast charts for your viewing pleasure. More additions coming! Drive safe and remember, weather never sleeps!
