Today, A Taste and Tease of Summer + Saturday, a Stunner! But Back to Cool and Wet Next Week, Perhaps a Nor’easter? What a Bummer

Posted on May 15, 2020May 15, 2020
May Temperature Anomaly for May (blue = cooler then normal)

Morning folks and happy Friday, yet another week gone bye. Just a brief update here with more details over the weekend. After 5 straight days of Frost Advisories and Freeze Warnings (In May no less!), it was down right “balmy” last night with lows in the upper 50s. It has indeed been a cooler then normal May (see map above), and Spring. That pattern unfortunately will continue, however be sure to get outdoors as we get a break today And Saturday with brief blast of summer winds. There’s a chance for storms later this evening, especially northern parts on up to southern New England. Here’s the nuts and bolts.

Today: A Taste and Tease of Summer

4pm Temperatures

Morning clouds and isolated showers give way to sunny skies as the mercury spikes into the low to mid 80s across the entire region (upper 60s to low 70s on Long Island). SW winds will increase through out the day driving in more humid conditions. There’s a shot at a pop up shower or t-storm later in the afternoon, but otherwise a winner. Timing on possible later storms in the tri-State area would be between 9pm and 1am. Latest model runs show the line weakening as it approaches our area from the NW, but more severe storms further north up in the S VT, S NH into Mass and CT. I’ll try to post an update on Twitter later today (again if you don’t use Twitter, you can still see my most recent tweets on my website, just scroll down below this post if using your phones). I’ll be on the road today helping our daughter move out of her off campus apartment up in NH, things we do for our children!

Saturday: A Stunner and Less Humid

Saturday High Temperatures

Any storms last night knock down the humidity and bring in a refreshing airmass. While not as warm as Saturday, temps climb into the low to mid70s, normal for this time of year (normal high/low: 72°F/53°F, record high 92°F in 2018, record low 40°F) and with plenty of sunshine!

Sunday: Transition Day; The Week Ahead: Ugh, Cool Windy Wet and Wild (Nor’easter?)

Sunday, not great but mostly dry, for now. Mostly cloudy and cool as temps trend down again into the 60s for highs.

GOES-16 Satellite Feature of Soon to be Tropical Storm Arthur

As for as the week ahead, we’re back to the cool and wet pattern. This time though, we’ll have a tropical feature impacting our area. If you recall my 4/17 initial forecast for a active hurricane season with my 4/30 post hint of an early start in May/June, we have a low pressure system near the Florida keys which may strengthen tonight or Saturday into Tropical Storm Arthur. It will remain off shore yet could create strong surf, windy conditions along the coast as it travels North toward the Carolina coast, before recurving out to sea. It will influence our weather this week with plenty of showers. But a separate cutoff low later in the week could deepen, along with a blocking high, may bring us Nor’easter type conditions. I’ll be tracking and updating you shortly.

Fingers crossed, but for Memorial Day Weekend (for those who lost track of the calendar its actually next weekend), the mercury may muster mild conditions! Looks like Beach and/or BBQ weather! Stay tuned. That’s it for now. Try to really enjoy the next 2 days because that’s it for the rays, at least until the end of the week. Time to hit the road. Remember, weather never sleeps!
