Good afternoon! I’m currently traveling but wanted to jump on for a quick update from my Wednesday post, specifically on tonight’s storm. Honestly don’t have any major changes to my initial forecast. This still looks like I84 north for accumulating snowfall, with areas south more of snow/sleet/freezing rain slopfest. But let’s narrow down the T’s (for new subscribers, that’s Track, Timing, Type, and Totals):
Southern New England (Boston area up to the Seacoast and Maine)
For Central and Eastern Mass up into the Seacoast, Central NH into coastal Maine, timing is pretty much the same as my Wednesday forecast. Snow moves into the region between 10pm-11pm tonight. Snow rates of 1 to 2 inches an hour are possible with a majority of the accumulation taking place while everyone’s asleep. Snow tapers off by daybreak, but as winds rotate out of the northwest you could see some light backlash accumulation of a couple of additional inches before noon.

My initial range of 4 to 8 inches seems solid but recall I initially hinted on possibly upping those totals. Don’t be surprised to see the higher end of that range, especially along the Seacoast from Portsmouth to Portland (8-10″ poss). I’m also moving the northern edge of accumulating snow from Lake Winnie up to north of Waterville. Sun breaks out Sunday afternoon into Monday with temps in the upper 20s to low 30s.
Tri-State Area (NJ/LI/Hudson Valley/CT)

No change here in terms of initial thoughts of a total slopfest for the tri-state area. While there is a tight gradient temperature wise with warm air aloft and the 540 thickness line north of area, any snow accumulation at the beginning especially around central and SNJ, NYC and LI New York City, Long Island will be limited (1-3″ tops). Snow will change over to sleet and freezing rain but fortunately as mentioned in the overnight hours. The wild card is lower to central Hudson Valley from Newburgh to Lagrangeville up to New Paltz which could see 3 to 6 inches possible in the overnight hours (NW/NNJ 2-4″) ending by daybreak as sleet/freezing rain. All elements are eliminated by Super Bowl Sunday.

For those traveling tonight around the tri-state please take care or avoid going out as precip moves in between 7-9 PM. Roads will be treacherous with accumulating sleet, freezing rain and snow. Guaranteed to see accidents across 78, 80, 87, GSP and the usual areas with fender benders galore.
That’s it for now. The multiple threats I alluded to for next week (Wednesday night into Thursday) being one, next weekend the other, and later into February are still definitely on the table. Still strongly recommend on dry days to load up on salt, get your cars cleaned from sand and salt buildup underneath, and make sure your shovels (and your backs) aren’t broken! This pattern is loaded with significant moisture so be prepared folks. Stay off the roads tonight, and go Barkley (but not an Eagles and definitely not a Chiefs fan who won’t win their 3rd in a row)! Mahomes will be asleep but remember, weather never sleeps!
Sensational ReMarks to help us hunker down properly for the Super Bowl! Thank you!
This Steeler fan will also be rooting Barkely–and Birds 🦅–on Sunday!
Thanks Maria! One day hopefully my Jets will be there. But there’s a better chance we have 10 blizzards of 3 feet each in one winter!
