Afternoon Run: 50s, Heading Home this Evening: 30s, Sunday Morning Coffee: Snow, Priceless!
Get the heck outside today, put away those winter jackets and gloves (but keep them close by), open the car windows and enjoy natural vitamin D! After a brief shower this morning, a stupendous spring like Saturday with partly sunny skies is on tap today with widespread 50s across the Northeast (ski country tops out in the low to mid 40s). A few spots may hit 60F across S NJ, Delaware and DC, and mid to high 60s down to Durham, NC to Duncan, SC! There will be lots of melting of all that thick ice up north! However, it’s a total cruel tease and gone in a breeze, literally. If you head out to dinner tonight, yes tonight, I’d recommend you bring your winter jackets as the mercury drops back into the 30s (20s across New England) on your way home.
For Super Bowl Sunday morning, many of us will be waking up to snow! How’s that sound? Hopefully that motivates you to get out today! This snow event begins overnight, ending by late morning to early afternoon for most. Across sections of eastern LI and SE MA (the snow capital of the northeast this winter), light to moderate snow will be falling at kickoff and throughout the game. This isn’t a major event. Perhaps the National Weather Service throws out a Winter Weather Advisory later today along its path which takes snow from Seven Corners, Shrewsbury to Soho (festive flakes north to Newburgh and New Paltz), out to Southampton, up to Stonington to Sandwich and Stoughton. Totals will range from 1 to 4 inches, but wouldn’t be surprised to see higher accumulations of 4-6″ in possibly Delmarva region (did you know that’s short for Delaware, Maryland and Virginia?) and SE MA again. I like the latest extended run of the HRRR model below for overall ranges.
For the week ahead, expect very cold yet dry conditions to continue Monday and Tuesday before we get another taste of spring-like temps Wednesday and Thursday. For those traveling, there’s a threat for very severe weather mid-week from MS, AL, TN, to IN and OH. Our next chance for precipitation in the Northeast comes Thursday into Friday, but looks more wet then white. But a just a heads up folks. While many are talking winter is over given some long range models forecasting much warmer temperatures ahead, we have experienced plenty of snowstorms (some blockbusters in late February, March and even into April), along with plenty of cold spells. So don’t fret lovers of winter, but smile lovers of spring as daylight hours are indeed climbing. There’s plenty of wild swings coming for all to enjoy. For now, get your vitamin D today, drive safe tomorrow morning (surfaces will be cold enough for snow to stick) and enjoy the Super Bowl, especially with new faces on the the gridiron (finally). And as always, remember weather never sleeps!
