- Today into tonight’s snowfall
- Significant mind numbing airmass
- Solar and quake updates
Good afternoon atmospheric audience! A day late and a snowstorm short. While I alluded to a snowstorm this weekend on my last post, life got away from me with an update for yesterday’s storm (5″ for WeatherReMarks headquarters, 28.2″ on season). But as I always say, the weather never sleeps and there’s plenty to discuss. Most of you in the impact areas, obviously you know about part two currently coming this afternoon across the tri-state area and further north into southern New England today. I’ll go over details below with impacts to the Pats and da Bears game, thoughts on upcoming storm threats, and most concerning, a significant Siberian pipe bursting airmass.

For later today into this evening, the low deepens off shore and snow intensifies along the I95 corridor, especially along the coast. Snow totals: 1-2″ across CNJ, 2-3″ across the 5 boroughs including Nassau County, 3-5″ further east into Suffolk County out to Montauk. Those totals go a bit higher into SE Mass to the Cape where 4-6″ is possible. For the Pats game snow looks like it will impact the game late in the 2nd half. For da Bears game temps will be in the teens, single digit winds chills with festive flakes in the air. For our system here in the north, snow ends before midnight across the Northeast. I can’t rule out festive flakes across NH and ME on MLK day.
Arctic Appetizer

Regarding the freezing cold temperatures I alluded to, we get a taste of what’s to come this Tuesday and Wednesday morning across the northeast. Widespread single digit lows from Basking Ridge to Bangor is on the table for both days. Temps moderate the rest of the week. However, get ready for the coldest Arctic outbreak we’ve seen in many years. This will be worse and longer in duration than the one in February of 2023, where many pipes burst, including mine. We hit minus 12°F, and minus 25°F wind chills!
This would be a good week to check your water pipes in your garages. Make sure they’re insulated before Siberian record breaking air mass arrives this Saturday, and on into the last week of January. Florida over to Texas will be impacted as well. We may have days where the high temperatures stay in the single digits to teens! Minus 10°F to minus 20°F below zero wind chills are on the table with below zero for lows across the Northeast. At least it won’t be minus 30°F to minus 50°F below across Michigan to Minnesota! Check your the boilers, again check your pipes for insulation. On these days allow your sinks to drip and keep cabinets open under the sink that are exposed to outside walls. Check out all the mind numbing, bone shaking maps below. More details coming on this folks.

As far as snow chances there’s plenty of opportunity for storms on the table. For this Wednesday into Thursday, a moderate snow event is possible across New England. More alarming for next weekend, possibly Sunday into Monday, a possible significant ice storm across northern sections of Georgia into the Carolinas, and snow further north is on the table. This needs to be watched.

And the threats keep on coming for the last week of January into early February. Stay tuned!!
SolarReMarks

As of this writing a strong X1.9 class solar flare was just emitted from sun spot 4341!

Combined with an earth facing large Coronal hole the opportunity for Aurora’s (and possible satellite, grid, cellular and website disruptions) are on the table later this week.

While too much detail to go into here, there is a direct correlation between active sunspot activity and earthquakes. That leads me into the next topic.
QuakeReMarks Update

Given sun activity would not be surprised to see a major quake in the coming week, the location not determined yet. But possibly across the Middle East. Will see. Separately, on Friday there was a large 6.0 earthquake off the coast of Oregon on the Juan de Fuca fracture zone. That wave of energy may transfer down to southern California producing up to 4.0 to 5.0 quake. Then possibly a smaller size quake over to FL up to Carolina’s, NJ, up to VT/NH/Quebec in coming weeks. No change on my Japan mega quake call. Still a significant threat.
That’s it for now. I know this was a lengthy post, but there’s a lot going on. I’ll be posting more frequently as we get deeper into the depths of winter. Feel free to share my posts. Where’s my “unseasonably warm” forecast?!?
Very informative. Except you did mention Mt. Kisco.
Keep warm
