Siberian Airmass Rushin’ Into the Northeast Tomorrow, Driving Strong Afternoon Storms, Followed by a Brief Plunge in Temps (and Snow Squalls up North!)

Posted on April 20, 2020April 20, 2020

Hello folks! Hope all is well. Ok, I’m back with an update on this active, cool and stormy pattern. Next up is a strong Siberian Airmass diving into our neck of woods tomorrow afternoon. This means business and will pack a punch. A fast moving squall line will drop gusty thunderstorms, brief but heavy downpours and isolated hail from Balt/DC, all the way up to the spine between the Green and Whites. It’ll swipe the entire Northeast and move off shore by sundown. Winds will be strong enough to bring down a few limbs and trees (isolated power failures) so use the usual precaution on where you park your cars, if possible.

Behind the front, the mercury plunges rapidly through out the evening, bottoming near freezing by daybreak Wednesday. Snow squalls in the Catskills, Adirondacks and higher elevations further NE, are possible given how cold the atmosphere is especially at 5,000 feet up. Tough to get them to NJ but you know I’ll be hunting for them. Frost and Wind Advisories are currently up for parts of the area and probably will be expanded shortly.

Timing: (appx, will narrow down tomorrow on Twitter. If you don’t have it, it’s ok. Go to my website and scroll down until you’ll find my 5 most recent Tweets and a link to my FB page is there as well).

For most of the I95 corridor, arrival time looks like between 2-4pm, as the line travels from the NW to the SE. NJ will clear up between 4-5pm, NYC/LI/CT/MA/VT/NH by 6pm, and RI and the Cape by 7/8pm.

Temperatures:

NJ/NY/Balt/DC: Tuesday highs: low 60s ahead of front (low to mid 50s further north)

NAM Forecasted 2pm Tuesday High Temps
NAM Forecasted 2pm Tuesday High Temps

But Temps plunge to the low 40s to upper 30s by 8pm and eventually down to the low 30s by Wednesday morning (upper 20s in NWburbs)! With strong winds gusting out of the NW, wind chills will be in the upper teens Wednesday morning!

NAM forecasted Wednesday Morning Temps

Wednesday will be mostly sunny but temps top out in just the mid 40s (windchills in the 30s). Yes, hats and gloves for your daily walks. I remind you the average H/L on this date is: 63°F/46°F. We moderate a bit on Thursday as temps climb into the mid50s under mostly sunny skies.

On deck is our next system which arrives to our area Thursday night into Friday, a soaker for the mid-Atlantic states (and possibly some snow up north), followed yet another system next Monday 4/27. While approximately 10 days out or so, I’m sniffing out a possible strong Nor’easter to end the month into May. Overall temps for the rest of April into early May for the Northeast will remain a bit cooler than normal (even Florida’s heatwave, which continues this week, moderates next week).

Euro Ensemble Forecasted High Wind Gusts 4/30, Nor’easter??

That’s it for now. Take your walks now or early tomorrow. Thanks as always for following and reading. Besides receiving my email alerts when I post my blogs, go to my site at weatherremarks.com and you’ll find in the menu section links to NE and U.S. satellite/radar info as well as other useful tools, of which I’ll be adding to in the coming months. Stay healthy, move your cars and dust of your jackets, hats and gloves if heading out tomorrow night and Wednesday. Oh, and if you have fireplace tomorrow’s a good night to throw in a log or two! And Remember, weather never sleeps!
