Milton Not Playing Games w Tampa Trouble Ahead; Aurora’s, Quakes, and Flakes Oh My!

Posted on October 5, 2024October 8, 2024
  • Major Hurricane Headed to Tampa
  • Aurora’s Possible for US Tonight
  • QuakeReMarks Update

Good afternoon folks! Yes it’s been awhile and glad to be back. Although my wife and I are at a remote location w little service celebrating our 30th I wanted to put out a brief post on tropical troubles, possible Auroras tonight and the week ahead Northeast outlook.

First, let’s discuss the topic of tropics. For those down in the sunshine state, if unaware, it’s not going to be a good week for Florida, esp on the west coast. First, there’s a weak system that drives flooding rains tomorrow into Monday on the west coast down to the Keys on over to the SE coast. 2-4″, higher isolated amounts possible. This unfortunately is just the appetizer folks.

There’s Tropical Storm Milton formed earlier today, located 210mi NNE of Veracruz, Mexico. Unfortunately, this will intensify to potentially a Major CAT 3 as it moves NE towards the west coast of Florida. Too early for specifics but preparations should begin now for those living 100mi to the north and south of Tampa. Landfall looks like approximately Wednesday. This will be a significant potentially catastrophic event and should be taken very seriously. It’s been approximately 103 years since Tampa last got hit by a Major Hurricane when the population was less than 300,000, now over 3 million (click on link for pics: Tampa 1921 Hurricane). The strength, size and track could make this one of the worst to hit Tampa. Milton will cross over Florida raking the state from Orlando to Jacksonville w hurricane force winds, yet move NE off the SE coast and away from land.

That’s great news for those devastated from remnants of Helene in NC/SC (welcome to my new subscribers from there). Milton steers far away from you and this week looks mainly dry.

Week Ahead for Northeast

Other than a weak cold front that brings rain to the entire northeast Monday the rest of the week into the weekend looks mainly dry. Expect some of the coldest temperatures so far this fall Wednesday and Thursday morning with widespread upper 30s to low 40s. Temps do rebound next weekend into Columbus Day with above average temperatures. Dare I say snow in the mountains mid to late month?

Auroras Around Tonight ?

My pic in NH from May’s event !

Finally moving up to a higher level of the atmosphere there’s a strong chance tonight across the northeast and lower latitudes to see the Aurora Borealis again. A very strong X class flare from the sun which erupted a few days ago should put on a dazzling display, fingers crossed. It’s the largest flare in this 25 year cycle and 15th largest ever recorded. There’s a lower probability of isolated network outages (cell phone and websites) and power disruptions.

QuakeReMarks

Moving in the opposite direction to the earths crust and further away from my atmospheric missives, there’s also a possibility of a pickup in seismic activity across the globe. There are a few of my followers that get my QuakeReMarks updates over the past few years, which is something I’ve been fairly interested in and somewhat accurate in forecasting. Keep an eye on the Pacific specifically around Australia up to Japan in the coming weeks to months for a major quake. More details to come on this topic. Now that I’ve rolled a couple of eyes it’s time to get back to my mini vaca. Look for an update early next week on details with hurricane Milton. Again take it seriously for those that live in its path. Most of all remember weather never sleeps !
