Mercury Madness, Solar Flares, Snowflakes and Mega Quakes!

Posted on December 9, 2025December 9, 2025
  • Cold airmass locked in
  • Bowling ball of clippers (Sunday and next week threats)
  • Geomagnetic Storm again!
  • 7.6 Quake hits Japan Coast and 7.0 in Alaska, what’s it mean for my MegaQuake Call?

Good morning, atmospheric audience. Unless you live under a rock bundle up out the door this morning as our next of many Arctic blasts blanket the Northeast. Today’s morning lows across Hudson Valley, Mass and the Seacoast are in the single digits (below 0°F in the Whites) and teens across the tri-state area. Shocking low dew points too! Remember as kids during the winter you’d shock your sister or brother’s face? I wasn’t kidding that we would open up December with temperatures well below normal. That still seems to be the case for the remainder of this month and into January. Yes, they’ll be warm-ups here and there but overall temps will be well below normal.

Euro Extended Temp Anomaly Thru 1/7/26

For Florida folks, another week of cooler temps, yet warmth makes a comeback next week. See above for a city near you, my updated Almanac for today’s normal high/low, and record high/low on this date. Lots to cover here so hopefully you’re reading this during your breakfast, coffee or whatever you fancy in the morning. I’ll provide my thoughts on when we can expect our next snowfall and rumors of a major storm or two, a sneak peek of Christmas, Auroras may be back again this week, and finally a troublesome and sobering update on my mega quake call.

First, I hope those who got their first snow of the season were happy. Areas that were expected to receive plowable snow did, including Hudson Valley, Vermont, New Hampshire up to Maine. The spine of NH did well including the Seacoast and coastal Maine. WeatherReMarks headquarters picked up a healthy 9″! For those that continue to be in the snow hole including NJ, NYC, LI and even Boston don’t fret, it’s coming. Even DC got in the game with an over inch last Friday!

Top NH Snow Totals:

12.6" Freedom
10.1" Danbury
9.3" Meredith
9.2" Lyman
9.2" Hamptead
9.0" Durham

8.4" Manchester Airport
8.3" Jefferson
7.8" Littleton
7.5" Wolfeboro
7.0" Keene
7.0" Concord
6.8" Stratham
6.6" Nashua
6.0" Merrimack
4.6" Portsmouth Airport… pic.twitter.com/ZXfXev5eJn

Ok, let’s talk snow. The first in a series of clippers zips over NH to Maine Tuesday night with just a dusting to an inch or 2.

Wed 8am to 7pm

Our second clipper arrives Wednesday morning in NJ, late morning into NH, before departing the Northeast late afternoon to after sundown (see above).

Upper Left: rain, Upper right: freezing rain, Lower Left: snow, Lower Right: sleet

Any accumulating snow will be limited to NW/ NJ, lower Hudson Valley, W MA and W NH with a couple of inches tops. The I95 corridor will be mainly rain as temperatures moderate. Conditions do become dicey, as sleet, freezing rain impacts Wednesday morning commute across lower Hudson Valley down to northern New Jersey along route 80/287.

NAM 3k Model Snow totals for Wed

Looking ahead to the upcoming weekend, aside from an outside shot of Friday festive flakes for DC / SNJ, look for a cold weekend PLUS possibly a snowy Sunday setup for the Northeast. I’ll be tracking this one. This will be followed by another Arctic blast beginning of next week.

Another storm threat is lurking for the middle to end of next week (17th-20th). Lastly, I’m trying to drum up a Christmas Eve major storm. A bowling ball of storm threats coupled with a continued intrusion of arctic airmass is on the table. Details forthcoming as we approach each event.

SolarReMarks Update

Clearly clear skies dependent, aurora activity may be back over the next few nights. A number of recent strong M and X class flares have lead to active geomagnetic storm conditions over the next few nights. Will be updating on X with details. Wednesday night looks like more favorable skies.

QuakeReMarks Update

First, we had a major 7.0 hit SE Alaska Saturday. This was followed by a swarm of 270 quakes in the same area. A wave of energy from this quake will move along the fault lines from the West Coast all the way the East Coast, possibly producing up to a magnitude 5 quake in NW California, and between 3-5 quake from AC to DC area over the next week or so. Let’s see. I’ve mentioned Alaska a number of times as a pressure point and foreshock to my Japan mega quake call. Check that off. As a reminder this is after the other pressure point swarm in Kamchatka back in July which produced a large 7.8 and an 8.8 earthquake.

Now, we have pressure point 3 which is off the coast of Japan. Recall the swarm there back on 11/9 of 20 or so quakes producing a 6.8 and 6.4? On my 11/11 Geomagnetic Storm Alert post, I shared my concern of further activity there, with a chance of a similar size impact as Kamchatka. Plus, if a similar sized quake as Kamchatka were take place, we may be very close to the mega quake. Well, if you didn’t see yesterday’s news, a major 7.6 earthquake hit that same spot off the coast of Japan! Given these events and pressure points being hit, I’m afraid we’re potentially weeks away. I’ve mentioned year end was possible, and up to Spring of next year. Of course nothing is locked (except for the plates) and don’t want to create fear. But this process is playing out as expected. To prevent repeating all the details I’ve written about over the past 6-9 months it’s all saved in the archive posts on my website. I do plan on creating and labeling tabs for each post so it’s easier to find specific information. I’ll be giving more updates shortly but I’d recommend avoiding travel to the West Coast, Japan, and the Asia Pacific. I understand that’s difficult for some, given family, planned trips and business. Just my opinion.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says the possibility of a mega quake in northern Japan is higher than usual. https://t.co/NGjwvxRrRv

Ok, that’s it for now. Bundle up, and load up on salt now before storms come. Plus check the boilers, pipes and drip the faucets on the frigid nights. Hey, unintended rhyme lol. Don’t forget, weather never sleeps!
