Good afternoon atmospheric audience! Jumping on for a quick recap of yesterday’s storm, details on tonight’s icy event, the week ahead, and thoughts on what’s lurking behind the scenes (potential potent pattern!). Overall it was solid snowstorm Friday! A few underperformance areas like NWNJ (forecast was 5-8″: top was 4.1″ in Ogden in Sussex cty, but Lyndhurst in Bergen cty hit 5.0″), where warm air and sleet kept down totals. Forecasts for the I78 to I80 area of 3-5″ came in on the low end of the range (2.4″ in Basking Ridge, but 4.0″ in Kinnelon). NYC received 4.3″ (my range of 3-6″), and largest snowfall in Central Park since January 28, 2022. Hudson Valley did well with 7.7″ in New Paltz to 9.0″ in Lagrangeville, and 6″ in Newburgh. Long Island joined the game with 6.2″ in Sayville to higher amounts further east with 7.5″ in Orient. Even 2″ of fluffy powder made it to WeatherReMarks!

Ok, let’s talk about our next winter event coming to the Northeast later today. This will be in the form of mainly freezing rain. What is freezing rain you may ask? Many are unaware of this, but it’s actually rain that freezes once it hits the cold surface which is much more dangerous than sleet and snow. Power outages are possible as well. Let’s talk timing.

For the tri-state area including Hudson Valley freezing rain moves into the area between 3pm and 5pm, ending between 8-10pm. If possible I’d avoid traveling in those areas this evening.

For NH and Maine, freezing rain fortunately moves in between 10 PM and midnight, but lingers into the morning commute, creating hazardous driving conditions. As temperatures rise above freezing along the Seacoast, precip turns to rain later tomorrow morning into the early afternoon before tapering off later in the day.

In the higher elevations up into the mountains, it remains freezing rain to a sloppy mix until the afternoon. Maine could pickup a few inches overnight into Monday morning.

Mon afternoon into Tuesday:

Once precip departs, a cold front blasts the Northeast with gusty conditions (30-50mph) Monday afternoon into Tuesday. Temps plunge once again Monday night into Tuesday morning (see below wind chills Tuesday morning and highs during the day).

New Years Eve and Day
Expect uneventful weather fortunately for the last day of 2025 into the first day of 2026. It’ll be seasonally chilly with possible festive flakes on both days. As of now, no travel issues next weekend.
What’s Lingering in January?

The potential of a perpetual polar airmass, and a possible powerful and plowable snow blitz the week of January 5th is lurking.

Multiple threats are also on the table along with a significant Arctic airmass invading the Northeast and into the South as well. I’ll be knee deep analyzing all the atmospheric gears, for what’s looking like a brutal January. I’ll be back shortly to keep you ahead of your point and click apps. That’s it for now. Off to watch my Super Bowl game (a few will understand this). But probably will just take a nap as as weather never sleeps!
