I95 Moderate Snowfall Tonight into Tuesday, Then Temps Tank; Does End of Week Storm Crank?

Posted on January 15, 2024January 15, 2024

An outstanding afternoon, my atmospheric audience! We are back yet again for our next moderate snow event here for the Northeast. Hope everyone enjoyed the snow squalls that move through our part of the country yesterday afternoon. Up here at WeatherReMarks headquarters, we had a squall come through painting the grass white. Temps dropped 7° in 15 minutes, great stuff! See my tweet at the end of post of my time lapse. Not one of the better ones but also check out the one below that from a drone from Amesbury, MA! Our next system is currently moving through the Tennessee valley up I81 into the DC Baltimore area, and up through NJ, Boston to Maine over the next 24 hours! While I did drop a hint of this event with the B word possibility, this will be just a moderate snow event. However, at the end of the week I’m tracking what looks to be more significant possibility. Will get into that in a moment.

Current Satellite

Let’s talk, track, timing, type, and totals. Again, this is not a major event but snow will accumulate with general 2 to 4″ along the I95 corridor. The snow drought in DC, Philly, and NYC may come to an end with this event, but big deal. By the end of this winter, this “drought” will long be forgotten. As I’m writing this week one of my long time followers in Alexandria sent me a pic snow covered grass. Snow continues to fall through out the afternoon with approximately 2″.

Tri-State Area (NJ, NYC, LI, Hudson Valley)

Light to moderate snowfall tracking from the SSW to NNE enters SW NJ between 4-6pm today, between 7-9pm across the 5 boroughs, NNJ and LI, and between 10pm and midnight in Hudson Valley. Most of the accumulation falls during the overnight hours totally 2-4″. While current model runs show snow tapering off by daybreak, there’s some concern for mixing of sleet and freezing rain between 8-12pm. Temps, which hover into the mid 20s overnight, trend towards the freezing mark as winds rotate out of the ESE, driving warmer sea surface temps into the system. This is a narrow boundary depicted in pink below, which track from Philly to Newark over to Stamford. Depending on how they treat the roads, conditions could be treacherous during rush hour into late morning. All snow and mix precip tapers off early to mid afternoon. I can’t rule out isolated higher amounts between 4-6″ in a narrow area, between south of 287 and north of 78, from Basking Ridge up to Wayne over to Oradell. Temps plunge into the teens by Wednesday morning.

NAM Forecasted Precipitation 9am Tuesday (Pink = Freezing Rain, Orange = Sleet

Southern New England into NH and Maine

Snow tracks NE into CT between 11pm and 1am, 1am and 3am into MA, and around 3am into S NH. Snowfall continues all morning Tuesday before tapering off in the early evening hours in NH up into Maine. Similar to the Tri-state area, totals will range between 2-4″ across most of CT and most of MA. However, as the low moves off shore and deepens from 1000mb off of LI Tuesday afternoon, down to 995mb near Bar Harbor Tues night, possibly down to 990mb (according to the RGEM model), 4-8″ are possible north of Lake Winny, up to the Loaf and northeast to Caribou. That mix line of sleet and freezing rain may impact parts of N RI up to Boston area mid to late afternoon Tuesday so take care during your commutes. Temps plunge overnight Tuesday into the teens Wednesday, with wind chills in the single digits.

Our next weather event is Friday/Saturday which will need to be watched. The “B” word I alluded last week for tomorrow’s system didn’t pan out, this time. On the risk of being wrong again, Friday has the chance to really crank folks. Besides a true arctic airmass in place, many of the atmospheric gears (a deep trough that drops into the eastern part of the US for one), are setting up to produce a significant storm.

Speaking of cold I’ve been alluding to, from Wednesday to Monday, temps will be approximately 10F below normal across the Northeast.

European Ensemble Temperature Anomaly Forecast for next 7 days

What’s “normal” you ask? Take a look below to find your city or one near by, to see today’s normal high and low temps for today’s date (along with the record high/low temps on this date and when).

European Forecasted Wind chills Wednesday Morning
European Forecasted Wind chills Thursday Morning
European Forecasted Wind chills Saturday Morning

Sunday morning across the Northeast looks like the coldest so far. IF this storm materializes, Saturday (see above) and Sunday (see below) will be much colder.

European Forecasted Wind chills Sunday Morning

That’s it for now. Be sure to check you inboxes this week for my latest details on this weekends potential and what’s coming down the pipe. Snowmobiling trails will be paved with white gold soon, as snow lovers will be thrilled. Bottom line, there’s a tremendous amount of potential for this winter. It’s just a matter of time. Enjoy the games, and remember weather never sleeps!

Thanks for sharing Dan. Take care in morning for slippery driveways, sidewalks, parking lots and side roads. Skies clear, winds subside and temps plunge in the teens, single digit wind chills.

The grass in Alexandria VA is now thoroughly covered by 4 inches or so. Thanks for the mention! Wayne too!
