Breaking: Tornado Watch for New England!

Posted on June 23, 2024

Good afternoon my atmospheric audience. I know it’s been a while since my last post but wanted to get on for this very important update for New England. We have a rare set up for severe weather this afternoon into the early evening across Vermont, New Hampshire into Maine. A very potent atmosphere with high dew points, a strong low level jet, warm SW winds and trough will be moving across our region shortly. This will lead to a strong to damaging squall line moving east across New England this afternoon into early evening.

Tornados are likely with this setup (a Tornado Watch is up for all of VT, NH, W ME and down to MA, not including SE MA to Cape). Primary threat will be damaging winds, hail, torrential downpours (isolated flooding in prone areas), and lightning. Some of cells are capable of rotation, producing isolated tornados across our region. Not all towns will be impacted so stay tuned to my X page (Twitter) for up to the minute updates. If you don’t have (you should even for just my weather updates), go to my website and you’ll see my 5 most recent tweets w/o having an account.

Here’s the timing on this line for each area (see snapshots below of the latest HRRR model for your areas):

Vermont

3-4pm

New Hampshire

4-5pm, from west to central part

5-7pm from central to Seacoast

Maine

NW, from Berwick to Bowdoin 6-7pm

Again, not every single town will be impacted as the line will be broken up in parts, but this set up should be taken seriously. Take any loose items indoors and remember to move your cars away from trees if possible. That’s it for now. I will be back shortly with more details on what’s coming next this summer. The triple H’s (heat, humidity and hurricanes) will certainly covered among other topics. Be safe out there today and remember, weather never sleeps!
