Good morning and happy frozen Friday. Just a quick update on this current mixed precip hitting the Northeast this morning. Main takeaway? As mentioned in my post on Wednesday, avoid traveling today, period. The atmospheric war between airmasses I alluded to on Wednesday is dueling it out currently. It’s a tale of 2 seasons across NJ with only 15 miles or so separating winter and spring. It’s currently 32F in Succasunna yet 57F in Stirling! In terms of the war, the warmth won pushing the snow line north by a mere 100 miles or so. Accumulation line now is from Schenectady, NY to Somersworth, NH and due north. However, of still major concern is the sleet and ice south of that line, spreading across southern parts of VT and NH, all of MA, CT, C/N NJ through the morning and afternoon. A flash freeze is also a big concern in the Mid Atlantic states later today as temps crash from the 40s and 50s to below freezing around sundown and rush hour. A fantastic day to work from home or if out this morning in NJ, leave work by lunch! I do have many subscribers here who commute to NYC and around the tri-state area. Numerous accidents are currently being reported across the Northeast. Don’t be that individual stuck in a ditch off of the turnpike, 287 or 78 for hours later tonight!! Fortunately, most if not all of this smorgasbord of snow, sleet, ice and rain slide off the map between 6-9pm tonight.
See above and below the forecasted sleet and ice accumulations across the Northeast. Bottom line, this will be an ALL DAY event. Sleet and ice are never something to take lightly, regardless of what vehicle you own. I cannot emphasize that enough. For those up in the Greens, Whites and N Maine, enjoy the much needed dump of white gold overnight and through out the day. Sugarloaf and Sunday River received nearly a foot and 9″, respectively, and over 10″ at Waterville last night, with another 4-8″ today. That’s it for now. I’ll be back over the weekend with my outlook on what’s lingering and lurking. Stay safe and off the roads, check on your neighbors, especially with any power outages due to icing, and careful shoveling this very heavy slop, a complete opposite from last weeks broom brushing blizzard! And remember folks, weather never sleeps!
