The Clash of a Cold + Warm Air Mass
Happy Halloween and congrats to the Nats! As we flip the calendar from October to November, we’re treated to bloody warm day. But mother nature flips the switch over night with a Halloween Howler bringing shivers to all who hate the cold. Just a quick post on the timing and impact of a Major front that blasts through the Tri-State area over the next 24 hours.
Looks like we have mainly overcast skies with off and on downpours especially between 3pm to 6pm. But we get a break in the evening during trick or treat time (but Milky Way’s will be eaten not seen tonight) until around 11pm (can’t rule out an isolated shower possible but nothing to cancel Halloween as some towns apparently have). Please enjoy the unseasonably warm day as temps climb into the low 70s and stay there through the evening! However, DON’T get used to it! It’s time to find and dust off your winter jackets and gloves which you’ll need out the door Friday morning as the mercury drops into the low 40s (upper 30s in the NWburbs) and with windchills in the low 30s! The bigger story are the winds which will be picking up through out the day and steadily increase tonight, creating more kindling for the upcoming winter.
Fortunately, the squall line arrives and blasts us into November between 11pm and 1am with strong wind gusts (30-50mph) and heavy downpours, but drying out by before daybreak. I’d recommend bringing in the garbage pals, any loose items and I’d especially take down the Halloween decorations. Again, the strength of the cold front will bring down branches and some trees creating isolated power outages overnight.
Friday, the first day of November, will provide plenty of sunshine yet it’ll be a blustery day with temps topping out only into the upper 40s (normal high/low is 61°F/41°F). It will be a perfect night to get the fireplaces going with temps falling into the low 40s to upper 30s after sundown (get those thermals out Friday night for the high school football games) AND, wait for it, near freezing by Saturday morning!
The weekend looks mostly sunny and unseasonably cool with temps in the low to mid 50s for highs and overnight lows down to the mid to upper 30s (and a chilly start but good conditions for the NYC Marathon Sunday). Good news, bad news, it’s that time of year again as we gain an extra hour of sleep Sunday morning but we lose an hour of daylight as the Sun sets on Sunday at 4:53pm. Don’t forget to change the few antiquated clocks we still have back an hour Saturday night (stove, microwave, and those old alarm clocks next to your beds, yeah admit you still have them)!
Ok, that’s it for now. I’ll be back shortly for my November forecast (possible arctic blast the end of next week), when we can expect our first flakes and my winter outlook! Check your inboxes for my updates, as well as my Twitter and Facebook pages, both at WeatherReMarks (if you don’t use either you can see them right here on my website). Enjoy the warmth today, dust off the winter jackets, bring in the decorations, and enjoy the extra hour of sleep because whether you like it or not, weather never sleeps!
